Canberra 100 — First 5 objects, 95 to go

Canberra 100 — First 5 objects, 95 to go

In 2020 Capital history here has started Canberra 100. With this project we are exploring Canberra’s history by identifying objects that can connect us with Canberra’s past. The end goal is to profile 100 objects that can tell much about the story of Canberra.

So far, we have looked at 5 objects. Yes only 95 to go, but we are really looking forward to moving ahead with Canberra 100. The first 5 examined have shown us the value of using objects as a way into Canberra’s history. We have also been encouraged by the generous feedback and support the project has received.

Regarding this special mention must be made of Tim the Yowie Man who featured Rohan Goyne, the project’s lead author and Canberra 100 in his weekly Canberra Times article. You can read his article here. ABC radio Canberra’s support has also been appreciated. Adrienne Francis has interviewed Rohan about the project a couple of times now.

First 5 objects

So, what have been the first 5 objects of Canberra 100? Also, at this point it might be helpful to clarify that the order of objects is not any comment on relative importance.

  1. The Canberra Red, the brick that built the City

  2. The Cummings concrete bus shelter

  3. The Bronze sculpture of Prime Minister John Curtin

  4. Monaro Mall logo sign

  5. Flag mast of Parliament House

Acknowledgement: Prime Minister John Curtin’s portrait above comes from the State Library of Victoria. It was taken in 1925 by an unknown photographer. Further details here. The bronze sculpture of Prime Minister Curtin is one of the first 5 objects covered by Canberra 100.

Please share. Let’s get the past and present talking.
